High Temperature Air Source Heat Pumps

Created 21Mar2024, Last edited 21Mar2024

cascade heat pump for high temperatureThe disadvantage to a cascade system is the running cost. Essentially two sets of compressors are being run to produce the one output of heat. This means the overall system COP (Coefficient Of Performance) is significantly less than a single stage heat pump.https://clade-es.com/blog/what-is-a-cascade-heat-pump-system/

BBC News - Will hotter heat pumps win over homeowners?

R290 is more environmentally friendly than older refrigerants so leaks are not as potentially damaging in climate change terms. Plus, it is up to 34% more efficient, which helps heat pumps supply higher temperatures without incurring severe efficiency losses.
Vattenfall, makes a heat pump that uses a different refrigerant, R744, or CO2. It can supply even higher temperatures, up to 85C.
a spokesman for Daikin says that its Altherma heat pump, which uses R32 as a refrigerant, can reach 70C. The firm plans to launch a range of R290-based heat pumps in 2024.
R290 heat pumps included in the trial have performed well. Getting COP 3.
R290-based heat pumps, such as the fact that they cannot be located near to air bricks or windows at ground level, to eliminate the risk of the refrigerant, which is flammable, leaking into such areas.
Sue Beesley, R290 45degC COP near 4.

Funny thing about high temp is it seems none are MCS Certified for higher than 65c flow temp and the scops are only around 2.8 so will probably cost more than gas to run.

They’re being pushed by national companies who just want to make quick money without changing radiators. They’re especially convenient for energy companies who will then make more money off the higher fuel bills which I don’t believe is a co-incidence. They might make sense when electricity is cheaper but the CO2 reduction is also less. This does not mean to avoid high temp heat pumps, just to avoid having them designed to run at high temperature. Tread carefully!

Mitsubishi Ecodan do an R290 unit and will heat water to 75degrees. But either way it should be designed as a low temperature heating system.
